Operation of RD Sampler

The Rupture Disk sampler is the tool of drill stem testing string. The RD sampler is controlled by a pressure-operated rupture disk and has a sample mandrel with a built-in differential area. To catch a sample, annulus pressure is increased to a predetermined level, the rupture disk in the sampler breaks, and the mandrel traps the sample.

When the rupture disk breaks, the differential area of the sample mandrel is exposed to an air chamber on one side and hydrostatic pressure and applied annulus pressure on the other. This condition results in the sample mandrel moving up and trapping the sample. When the sample mandrel reaches the top of its stroke, it is locked in place by a set of locking dogs.

The 1,200-cc sample chamber allows a sufficient sample for two 500-cc non- monophasic (bulk) samples.

﹡HSE﹡Safety instructions:

• When running each pressure test, you must increase pressure gradually. When the pressure is up to 20MPa, hold on for one minute, then every 10MPa keep it for one minute until the rating pressure;
• During doing the pressure test, the tool should be placed in the test pit and cover the protecting board on the pressure test plug.
• During the whole process, make sure the entire test operator keep away from plug and joint which may lapse.
• Test area should set isolation, others except operator not allowed to enter test area
• If there is anybody in the test area, it should set isolation, avoiding test production fly off the test area.
